Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors Inc. clearly expanded its sustainable energy footprint in 2016, as shareholders overwhelmingly approved the acquisition of SolarCity Corp. The deal, valued at $2.6 billion, integrated the maker of all-electric cars and batteries with the installer of rooftop solar panels.

As a result of a company-wide shareholder campaign, more than 85 percent of Tesla’s shareholder votes were submitted in favor of the merger.
